Thompson Boxing Promotions signed junior featherweight prospect Jorge “Tito” Ruiz (3-0, 1 KO) to an exclusive promotional contract, the Southern-California promoter announced today. Ruiz is the fourth boxer to sign with Thompson Boxing in the last several weeks. The promotional company has been busy signing prospects to fill the various shows it promotes in Southern California’s boxing-friendly Inland Empire.
“This is a great day for me and my family,” said Ruiz, who at five-foot-nine, stands taller than most 122-pounders. “All of the hours in the gym, the roadwork, the coaching, it has been in preparation for this. I have a lot of faith and confidence in Ken Thompson and Alex Camponovo. They have been great throughout the entire process and I am extremely thankful for this opportunity.”
“We had been scouting Ruiz for quite some time,” said Alex Camponovo, matchmaker and general manager of Thompson Boxing. “Initially we were drawn to his size. You just don’t see that many junior featherweights with the length and size of Ruiz. In addition to his height and reach, we feel he has a very high ceiling. We look forward to watching him showcase his skills on one of our upcoming Thompson Boxing events in September.”
Ruiz is trained and co-managed by Sergio Melendez, while his father, Jorge Ruiz, Sr. shares managing responsibilities with Melendez.
The 21-year-old Ruiz had a brief amateur career with 40 fights and won two national amateur boxing tournaments in the junior featherweight division prior to turning professional.
“Ultimately I want to be viewed as a complete boxer,” Ruiz said. “I work tirelessly on both my offensive and defensive packages. I see improvement with each fight and I know if I keep grinding I will develop into one of the best in this division.”
