Since making the move up to heavyweight, Oleksandr Usyk has arguably beaten the three best fighters in the division other than himself.
Usyk’s wins over Anthony Joshua (twice), Daniel Dubois and, most recently, Tyson Fury has cemented his status as one of the best boxers on the planet.
The Ukrainian is set to rematch Fury on December 21st, after dropping the 6’9 Brit on route to a split decision victory in Riyadh earlier this year.
Should he prove victorious, many could forgive the 37-year-old for believing there is nothing left to prove in the sport and hanging up the gloves.
However, his promoter Egis Klimas has told Boxing King Media his charge would be interested in a second showdown with IBF heavyweight world champion Dubois.
“Would we set up a fight with Dubois if Usyk beats Fury? Absolutely. I don’t think anyone else is left in the heavyweight division.
“Right now, Daniel Dubois is the IBF champion. Many people discussed the first fight, claiming it wasn’t a low blow, but it undoubtedly was.
“The referee gave us recovery time, and I believe any smart fighter would use that chance.
“For many, this raised questions, and for Oleksandr, a fight with Dubois after Fury would be the ideal opportunity to show he can beat him and become the undisputed heavyweight champion a second time.”
Dubois has been in the form of his life since falling short against Usyk last summer, scoring wins over Jarrell Miller and Filip Hrgovic before his historic win over ‘AJ’ back in August.
Many felt ‘DDD’ was unfortunate to have a shot on the beltline ruled a low blow when he fought ‘The Cat’, a fight in which he was eventually stopped in the ninth round.
However, coming off a career best performance and seemingly brimming with confidence, it would be foolish to write the Londoner off against an ever-ageing Usyk – provided he gets past Fury for a second time.
