On March 24 at the Palacio de Los Deportes in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Sampson Boxing and Manguita Promotions will proudly present an outstanding night of professional boxing in tropical paradise.
The night’s main event will feature a very special homecoming, as Santo Domingo’s own Victor “Mermelada” Cayo (27-2, 19 KOs) will face Jacksonville, Florida’s former unified lightweight world champion Nate “The Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell (34-9-1, 25 KOs) in the 10-round junior welterweight main event.
The smooth boxing Cayo remains a crowd favorite and top-rated contender in the 140-lb division. His only losses have come against world champions Marcos Maidana and Lamont Peterson. He was last seen quickly dismantling Nelson Sanchez in Punta Cana last November.
Campbell, who won the IBF, WBO and WBA world championships by defeating Juan Diaz in 2008, will be looking to move himself back into contention with a victory over Cayo. An extremely hard puncher, Campbell is still a dangerous opponent for anyone in the world.
On the undercard, Sampson Boxing will continue its enthusiastic support of female boxing by showcasing hometown world champion Dahiana Santana (28-6, 12 KOs) defending her IBF Featherweight Championship in a 10-round battle against the woman from whom she won her title: Miami, Florida’s Stacey Reile (10-4, 4 KOs).
It will be battle stations when these two meet, as the two women have split a pair of fights and this rubber match will settle their rivalry once and for all.
And in another women’s fight with world significance, IBF Junior Featherweight Champion Ada Velez (20-3-3, 6 KOs) will defend her belt against Santo Domingo native and once-beaten contender Katy Wilson Castillo (14-1, 9 KOs) in a 10-round scrap.
Velez is a formidable champion with several wins over top opponents, but Wilson Castillo has only lost once, in a world championship challenge to a South American in South America.
On the undercard, Sampson Boxing will showcase a pair of young knockout artists who will be making their US debuts in the near future, as junior welterweight Juan Carlos Abregu (6-0, 6 KOs) and featherweight Braulio “El Chavo” Rodriguez (6-0, 6 KOs) will each make appearances.
Both fighters will soon be part of the stable of Sergio Martinez and under the supervision of super-trainer Pablo Sarmiento.
More bouts and all undercard opponents, as well as ticket information will be made available shortly.
