Sammy Vasquez Jr. is an undefeated professional fighter on the cusp of moving from prospect to legit contender. His story has been told before, but this is a good chance to get to know him in the I Am A Fighter segment from Showtime.
He cites the 9/11 attacks when he was a senior as the catalyst from him enlisting. He joined the National Guard, and was sent to Iraq.
He recalls some very close encounters, with bullets flying past his head, and not knowing whether he’d make it or not. In between tours, he was training and participating in the Golden Gloves.
But he had to deploy again. He says the second tour was a bit easier, but with different rules of engagement, it created some confusion and hesitation in their operations.
After his 2nd tour, he eventually turned pro in 2012. He says his time in Iraq has prepared him mentally for life as a professional fighter, and he’s looking to showcase that military side and his personal history in a positive light.
Enjoy the video with Vasquez and don’t forget to see him in action when he fights this weekend.
