Al Bernstein is back with his latest pre-fight keys to victory segment, this time analyzing this weekend’s Bernard Hopkins vs. Sergey Kovalev clash. Even with Hopkins vs. Kovalev taking place on HBO, not Bernstein’s home of Showtime, he offers his take on the bout and what he believes each man needs to do in order to be successful.
For Hopkins, Bernstein believes he needs to establish the jab. This will also help him to control the pace, which he needs at nearly 50 years of age. He also needs to simply be Bernard, and use all of his technical wizardry and tricks.
For Kovalev, Bernstein says he needs to hook Hopkins to the body, and avoid long lulls, so he doesn’t give Hopkins any rest. His big punch is the straight right hand, so he needs to try to land that punch and potentially score a knockdown or knockout with it.
