Jhonny Gonzalez shocked many in the boxing world when he quickly kayoed then unbeaten Abner Mares. At the time, Mares had been a clear top 5 pound for pound fighter. Now, in one of the freshly announced fights in the Premier Boxing Champions lineup on Showtime & CBS, Gonzalez will take on Gary Russell Jr, who’s looking to bounce back from his first career defeat at the hands of Vasyl Lomachenko.
Jhonny Gonzalez defends his WBC title against quick-punching challenger Gary Russell Jr. in the main event of a Showtime Championship Boxing doubleheader, featuring Jermell Charlo vs. Vanes Martirosyan in the co-main. Watch all the action Saturday, March 28 at 10p ET.
We currently rank Gonzalez #2 and Russell #8 at 126 lbs.
One has to wonder how exactly Russell got himself into this position, or more to the point, what he did to deserve to be put in this position. Stylistically, it’s also a fight that he’s capable of winning. It all comes down to that big punch of Jhonny Gonzalez though. And if he connects, it’s usually lights out. Just ask Mares.
