Ortiz vs. Lopez & Matthysse vs. Soto Results
On Saturday night, Showtime gave fight fans two great, exciting matches, and ultimately the night ended in surprising fashion, as Josesito Lopez TKO’d Victor Ortiz in the 9th round after breaking his jaw with a left hook. Right here, watch a video recap of the Ortiz vs. Lopez and Matthysse vs. Soto results.
The first fight of the evening proved to be just as fun as everyone thought it would be. Matthysse and Soto were trading some bombs in a fast-paced encounter. But ultimately, Matthysse was the bigger and stronger guy, with less wear and tear on his body, and he was able to not only put Soto down for the first time in his career, but knock him out in the 5th round.
Ortiz vs. Lopez also was an exciting encounter, with both men fighting at a fast pace and trading heavy blows. Lopez was able to survive a rabbit punch to the back of the head, a dangerous foul which could have resulted in a DQ win. Instead, he got the win the old fashioned way, when he connected with a huge left hook to break Ortiz’s jaw, an injury which forced the stoppage of the fight. Of course, this means that the Saul Canelo Alvarez vs. Victor Ortiz fight for September has to be out of the picture, and yet again, Canelo will need a new opponent. One wonders if Ortiz had his mind on Canelo and wasn’t properly prepared or focused here.
Either way, Josesito Lopez deserves a ton of credit, and he continued to prove that he is THE upset master in the boxing game today. So congratulations to him. He will be in consideration to face Canelo, however, that would require that he moves up yet another weight class, and he might simply not have the size to do that — although he would never pass up the opportunity.
