Well, it didn’t exactly go as planned, but Ricky Burns emerged as the victor on Saturday night in Glasgow, Scotland, sending home Puerto Rican challenger Jose Gonzalez with the first loss of his career, and notching another successful defense of his WBO lightweight title. Burns though fell behind early in the fight, and seemed to be heading towards a loss. He needed to ratchet up the heat and begin looking for a big knockout.
Right here, you’ll find a video of the post-fight presser from the Burns vs. Gonzalez fight, and you’ll see what Burns and his team have to say about the performance and the entire bout.
Burns gets credited with a 9th round TKO victory, with Gonzalez retiring after the round. After taking a good deal of punishment as Burns soared back into the fight, Gonzalez stayed on his stool, also citing a hand injury. Burns was behind on the scorecards of all three judges, and as mentioned, had to begin looking to turn things around several rounds earlier after falling so far behind.
While Burns certainly would have preferred to start the fight better, he still scored a nice victory, and he returned to action after lots of layoffs and fight cancellations. Perhaps by showing some vulnerability here, he’ll be more likely to attract a big name fight next.
