Vitali Klitschko Named WBC Fighter of the Year

The World Boxing Council has announced their award winners for 2011. WBC Heavyweight Champion Vitali Klitschko received the award for “Fighter of the Year”. In 2011, he defended his championship belt twice: In March against Odlanier Solis by KO 1 and in September against Tomasz Adamek by TKO 10.

“I am happy to be awarded by the WBC and it will give me additional motivation for my future fights. I am proud to have the same belt that Muhammad Ali, Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson had. Against Chisora on February 18, I will show again that I am the strongest in the world”, says Vitali Klitschko.

With his two title defenses, the elder Klitschko brother was in consideration for the ProBoxing-Fans.com 2011 Champion of the Year award.

Fight fans can check out our complete collection of 2011 boxing awards, which includes fighters and fights from across the entire sport, as opposed to the WBC, which hands out awards only to fighters that hold their belts or pay their sanctioning fees. They also hand out odd awards, like “special honors” to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, to whom Jose Sulaiman has publicly admitted that he loves like a family member.

Vitali Klitschko’s next title defense will be against Dereck Chisora at the Olympiahalle Munich, Germany on February, 18, 2012. Tickets are available at www.eventim.de.
