The Super Six Finals match of Andre Ward vs. Carl Froch has been postponed. Ward suffered a cut during training camp, and needed to get 7 stitches above his his right eye. Ward actually broke the news via his Twitter account, before more information later surfaced about what happened and what it might been for the upcoming Ward vs. Froch fight.
Apparently the cut happened somewhat randomly during sparring, although Ward was wearing full head gear at the time. It’s a straight cut which should allow it to heal quickly, and Ward was flown to a specialist to get the stitches done. He met with the same doctor who stitched up Vitali Klitschko after his face was torn apart against Lennox Lewis.
At this time, there has been no word on when Ward vs. Froch might be rescheduled. With a busy calendar year for the fall and winter, it might not take place until the beginning of 2012.
The Super Six Tournament has been plagued by problems from the start, and it’s already been two years since it began, and another delay would send it closer to two and a half years. The Finals matchup between Ward and Froch still had plenty of people psyched up, and it’s the best possible result coming from the way the tournament had to be pieced together and altered along the way. However, this unfortunate delay will cause some of that momentum to dissipate once again.
