Recapping a Busy Memorial Day Boxing Weekend
There was a full slate of exciting boxing action this Memorial Day weekend, only most of it wasn’t on the major television networks that American fight fans utilize to watch the big matches. Instead, a handful of titles were retained and won in off-television, online PPV and Spanish language channels. Here’s a recap of the great boxing action and boxing news from this weekend.
Vitali Klitschko Wins Against Over-Matched Sosnowski
Klitschko made the fourth successful defense of his WBC heavyweight title by stopping the largely unknown Albert Sosnowski at 2:20 of the tenth round. The challenger put up a good effort and showed heart, but as per usual, Klitschko proved to be too much for his man. Referee Jay Nady stopped the bout after Klitschko pummeled Sosnowski to the canvas.
Vazquez Jr. Stays Unbeaten
Undefeated WBO super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. kept his “0” intact by besting the previously undefeated challenger Zsolt Bedak. After pummeling Bedak for most of the evening, Vazquez Jr. finally finished him off in the 10th round. It solidifies his standing amongst a lightened crop at 122 lbs, with so much of the division moving up to greener pastures at featherweight.
Roman Martinez Continues his Run At Super Featherweight
Another ravaged division is the formerly fierce super featherweights, where on the same card as Vazquez Jr vs. Bedak, the number 1 rated 130 lber in the world, Roman Martinez, scored a fourth round knockout to retain his titles. The fourth round KO victory came against unheralded Gonzalo Mungia.
Miguel Acosta Solidifies WBA Lightweight Crown
In a battle of WBA lightweight champions, the interim title holder, Miguel Acosta, stopped the full title holder, Paulus Moses, in the sixth round of their contest. While the Acosta win is considered an upset, ProBoxing-Fans.com had him rated higher than Moses, the regular champion, coming into the contest on the strength of his previous upset win over then undefeated Urbano Antillon.
Juan Carlos Burgos Wins WBC Featherweight Eliminator
In a WBC featherweight title eliminator match, yet another 10th round stoppage victory took place over the weekend, as Juan Carlos Burgos stayed undefeated with a 10th round TKO over Ricardo Castillo. Castillo did not come out for the 11th round of the contest, staying on his stool. Burgos now gets his title shot against Elio Rojas in the near future.
Librado Andrade Back to Winning Ways
On Friday evening, fan-favorite Librado Andrade took out hometown favorite Eric Lucas, with the fight being waved off after the eighth round due to cuts and accumulation of punishment. Andrade is working to build himself back into a contender at 168 lbs after his rematch loss against Lucian Bute.
….Daniel Judah was upset in a cruiserweight contest, losing to the now 8-1 Adam Seal…. Shannon Briggs scored a first round KO victory over Rob Calloway, his second first round KO win in a week…. Sebastian Lujan got a stoppage win over Jailer Berrio….. Omar “Son of the Legend” Chavez took home the 22nd win of his young career over Rodrigo Juarez…
That does it for the weekend recap of boxing news and results. Four titles were retained or won, and another man earned an upcoming title shot, amongst a handful of other interesting bouts as well. Not bad for a night or two of action!
