At The Little Creek Casino in Shelton, Washington ESPN Friday Night Fights showcased a main event with Gabriel “El Chico Guapo” Campillo upsetting undefeated light heavyweight contender Thomas “Top Dog” Williams Jr., earning a fifth round stoppage as the ringside physician called a halt to the bout prior to round six due to a bad cut over the left eye of Williams.
With the win, Campillo of Madrid, Spain, will now be ranked the #2 contender by the IBF and improved his record to 24-6-1 (10KO’s) while Washington D.C. native Williams turned to 17-1-0 (12KO’s).
In the co-featured bout of the evening, Andre “The Matrix” Dirrell shined in his return with a fifth round stoppage of New England veteran Vladine “Mr. Providence” Biosse.
Time of the stoppage was 2:46 as Dirrell, now 22-1-0 (15KO’s) displayed his full offensive arsenal, Biosse moving to 15-5-2 (8KO’s).
In an outstanding “Fight of the Year” candidate TV swing bout, highly regarded prospect IMMANUEL ALEEM of East Meadow, New York and Mexican veteran JUAN CARLOS ROJAS had the crowd on their feet throughout their six round super middleweight bout that featured excellent two-way action throughout.
With quick changes in momentum from the opening bell, the
20-year-old Aleem earned the stoppage, drilling Rojas with a massive right hand causing the fight to be stopped at the 2:45 mark of the sixth and final stanza.
Aleem moves to 10-0-0 (6KO’s) while Rojas heads to 6-7-1 (4KO’s).
In a four round featherweight rematch battle, Van Nuys, California prospect JUAN FUNEZ clashed for the second time with local favorite MARCELLO GALLARDO of Auburn, Washington in front of the partisan fans.
Controlling the action from the outset with a range finding jab, the southpaw Funez appeared on his way to once again defeating Gallardo.
At the end of the four stanzas the judges however could not agree with the final score of 39-37 for Funez overruled by the two other judges scoring the bout 38-38 resulting in the majority draw.
Staying undefeated, the disappointed Funez moved to 5-0-1 (2KO’s), while Gallardo headed to 3-1-2.
New York City based super middleweight prospect PHILLIP JACKSON-BENSON shined on Friday night with a fourth round stoppage of Ashland, Kentucky veteran THOMAS HANSHAW.
With an array of power shots, Jackson-Benson dropped game Hanshaw twice in the fourth round, the bout being stopped at the 1:50 mark of the stanza.
Jackson-Benson improves to 14-1-0 (13KO’s), Hanshaw’s record now 6-4-0 (3KO’s).
With his brother, world champion RANCES BARTHELEMY working his corner. junior lightweight prospect LEDUAN BARTHELEMY wasted no time stopping GUADALUPE HUDGENS with a destructive body shot stopping the action at 1:19 of the first round.
Fighting out of Guantanamo, Cuba, Barthelemy moves to 3-0-0 (3KO’s), while Hudgens stays winless at 0-2-0.
Fighting out of Washington, D.C. welterweight prospect DAVID GRAYTON improved to a perfect 9-0-0 (7KO’s) with a second round knockout of EDDIE CORDOVA, 4-9-1 (1KO) of Clearfield, Utah. Time of the stoppage was 2:30.
In the cruiserweight division, Grand Rapids, Michigan’s JORDAN SHIMMELL clashed with longtime veteran EPIFANIO MENDOZA of Barranquilla, Columbia in a scheduled eight round battle.
With Mendoza’s roughhousing tactics escalating in the fourth round and after a point deduction for repeated fouls, the former world title challenger was disqualified at 2:31 of the round.
Shimmell improves to 16-0-0 (14KO’s) while Mendoza heads to
37-18-1 (33KO’s).
Perennial contender WALE “Lucky Boy” OMOTOSO moved back into the win column with a hard fought eight round stoppage (1:09) of the valiant EDUARDO FLORES of Quito, Ecuador.
Omotoso, fighting out of Los Angles, California improves to 24-1-0 (19KO’s) while Flores falls to 16-14-3 (11KO’s).
Puerto Rican contender LUIS CRUZ was upset over eight rounds in his junior lightweight clash with Los Angeles, California veteran JOAQUIN CHAVEZ.
With Chavez drilling Cruz to the canvas in the opening round and terrific two-way action throughout, the fans were treated to an action packed fight throughout.
Scores were 78-73 and 79-72 for Chavez, 8-14-3 (2KO’s) for his majority decision win over Cruz, 21-3-0 (16KO’s) who was awarded one score of 77-74.
Fort Lauderdale, FL middleweight WILKY CAMPFORT improved to 18-1-0 (10KO’s) with a third round stoppage of former world title challenger Columbia’s MILTON NUNEZ, 27-11-1 (25KO’s). Time of the stoppage was 2:57.
Closing the evening of action, Baltimore’s GERVONTA “Tank” DAVIS, 8-0-0 (8KO’s) stayed perfect with a first round stoppage of Yakima, Washington’s HECTOR LOPEZ. Dropping Lopez from a barrage of punches, the bout was halted at the 1:16 mark.
Frankie Gavin Suffers First Defeat
On a night in which unbeaten British fighter Frankie Gavin was supposed to move from prospect status to legitimate world contender, he instead suffered the first setback of his professional career. Leonard Bundu defeated him in a bloody, hard-fought affair, earning a split decision nod.
While Gavin acquitted himself well and closed the fight strong, he also appeared to be the worse for the wear between the two fighters. Bundu got the nod via 114-113 and 114-113 scores, against one 115-113 card for Gavin. Gavin was sent down in the 6th round via a body shot and also had a bad cut, and was nearly stopped on his feet before making a late rally.
It’s his first defeat, either professional or amateur, in nine years.
