The boxing world is still buzzing from Marcos Maidana’s win over Adrien Broner, a victory which apparently millions of fans enjoyed vicariously as if they were the ones doing the punching. While much of the talk has been about how classless and foolish Broner makes himself appear, the Broner vs. Maidana results have major ramifications for the welterweight division, and the potential slate of fights we all could be looking forward to in 2014.

The welterweight division has been the center of the boxing universe for the past few weeks. Consider all of the action — Marcos Maidana’s huge win over Adrien Broner, Shawn Porter’s surprise victory over Devon Alexander, Paulie Malignaggi’s strong showing against Zab Judah, and Keith Thurman’s knockout of Jesus Soto-Karass.
That’s eight fighters, all of whom are at least in the top 15 or 20 in the division, many in the top 10, who’ve been in action over just a few weekends. That means that there’s been some huge shakeups in our top 10 and how the division looks. Plus, as some of these guys also have called 140 lbs home, we’ve needed to go back to the drawing board with the top 10 there as well.
