Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams took another step back towards a world title shot with a clear points win against Patrice Volny over 12 rounds at middleweight at the Caribe Royale in Orlando on Saturday.

Williams (18-1, 12 KOs) lost his unbeaten record last June to Hamzah Sheeraz, who took an 11th round stoppage victory, but returned to action in November 2024, stopping Gian Garrido in the fifth of an eight rounder in Philadelphia. Volny (19-2, 13 KOs) was coming off an impressive win last time out over Steven Butler, halting him in nine rounds last June.

Williams began well to the body in the first round as the visitor operated behind a tight guard, and that pattern continued into the second.

Volny worked well off his jab in the third, and had his success in round four, and although ‘Ammo’ landed with a decent flurry in round five, the Canadian found a good home for his left hook a round later.

Williams began to up the gears, and was working well in bunches, especially in rounds eight and nine, and the 10th saw him split Volny’s guard with regularity.

The 35-year-old rolled the dice in the penultimate frame, landing an eye-catching uppercut, but Williams held firm, and looked to have done enough to get the win.

That was confirmed by scores of 118-110, 116-112 and 115-113 that kept the 28-year-old on track for what he hopes to be a world title opportunity in 2025.

Berlanga blasts out Gonzalez-Ortiz

Edgar Berlanga returned from defeat to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez last time out, and he blasted out Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz inside a round.

Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) came in over the super middleweight limit and made a deal with his opponent to keep the WBO NABO belt on the line.

‘The Chosen One’ dropped the Puerto Rican heavily with a whipping left hand, and a hard right on the resumption had him over again.

A short combination on the third restart drove Gonzalez-Ortiz (20-1-1, 16 KOs) to the ropes with his body all over the place, and the referee waved the fight off.

Berlanga called for a showdown with former super middleweight world champion, Caleb Plant.

Jones impresses on debut

Omari Jones made his professional debut, and the 2024 Olympic Bronze medalist needed just two rounds to take victory in his super welterweight clash with Alessio Mastronunzio (14-6, 4 KOs).

A volley of punches from Jones (1-0, 1 KO) in the second round prompted referee Luis Pabon’s intervention, even if perhaps a little early.

Promoter Eddie Hearn revealed the Orlando man will return on April 12 on the undercard of the welterweight unification clash between Jaron Ennis and Eimantas Stanionis in Atlantic City.

Ortiz sees off Alamo

Former world title challenger, Jamaine Ortiz (19-2-1, 9 KOs) won his second contest in a row since a 2024 defeat to Teofimo Lopez, as the super lightweight took a points win over ten rounds against Yomar Alamo (22-4-1, 13 KOs).

Two scores of 99-91 and a third tally of 98-92 reflected Ortiz’s dominance.

Remaining Undercard

The sole eight rounder came welterweight, where Pablo Valdez (9-0, 8 KOs) took a fifth round win against Mauro Maximiliano Godoy (37-11-1, 18 KOs).

In a four round affair, Carlos Jamil De Leon Castro (4-0, 3 KOs) was a third round winner against Carl Rogers (3-2) at super featherweight.
