Incheon Red Wings Become Pohang Poseidons in World Series of Boxing:
Having secured local government support from the city of Pohang, the Korean franchise in the World Series of Boxing is changing its identity from the Incheon Red Wings to Pohang Poseidons ahead of its next home match on January 28th, when the team will face the Astana Arlans at the Pohang Indoor Sport Gymnasium.
The change means that the team’s base moves from Incheon, in the north-west of the country near the capital Seoul, to the city of Pohang, some 500 kilometres away in the south-east. Pohang is an important sea port and the new name and team logo clearly reflect the team’s new coastal associations.
Pohang Poseidons will use the Pohang Indoor Sport gymnasium as their home base for the next match, then move to the Seoul Education and Culture Center for the following two home matches against the Beijing Dragons and Baku Fires, before returning to Pohang for their final match of the 2010-2011 regular season on March 19th, when they will take on the Astana Arlans once again.
Despite the name change, the boxing squad remains exactly the same. The Poseidons are currently third in the Asian conference standings, tied on four points with the Beijing Dragons but with one win more than the Chinese side on bouts. Their light heavyweight, Abdelhafid Benchabla from Algeria, is second in the individual rankings at 85 kilos. The team plans to be based out of Pohang full time from the second season.
